The battles of the “unknowns”

The first story in the column “Resistances at the Border”, published for the December 2024 issue, is called Battles of the “Unknown”. The title was chosen by Mohammed and Fanta, a young couple originally from Sierra Leone, who met in Tunisia last August.

here is the explanation:

“Since the beginning of our journey, we have passed through different countries, with lives, people, cultures and traditions that we did not know. We had to fight in every place or country we found ourselves in, just to survive. And we are still going to an unknown land.”

Their story takes us across multiple borders of the African continent, shedding light on the systematic violence – abuse, exploitation, oppression – that affects those forced to move without documents. At the same time, it is a testimony of extraordinary resistance, a story of love, strength and hope that challenges the dehumanizing system of borders. The union of Mohammed and Fanta, as well as the dreams and ambitions that guide them, demonstrate that even in the most hostile places, resistance and change can arise.
